Screw Conor: Dec. 8th, 2004 @ 02:35 am
And girls, I do not mean this literally.

But I did, despite the fact that I hate Conor Oberst, download his two new albums. And I like them.
Screw! Shite! Fuque!

Subconcious jealousy dictates my life.

Fitting, I guess.

Another drunken music-obsessed entry? Yup. This is my time, bitches.

First - Daniel Johnston is still tops. God it would have been great to see an Austin show from the days when he ate Big Macs from the McDonald's dumpster. So I say this: if you've never gotten into Daniel, pick up "The Late, Great," as it features a ton! of great bands doing covers of his stuff. And a second disc of the originals. It might make it a mite more accessible. Gawd, I love Eef Barzelay when he covers other people's songs. He's on the disc, but man: check out Clem's cover of "I'll Be Your Mirror." That's Velvet Underground to generations X-Z.

Update! So I meant to play open mic tonight, but it didn't pan out. See, I have a problem with remembering lyrics, including my own. Next week, then.

The fun I had: playing and singing Magnetic Fields pretending I was Conor Oberst. One thing I notice about that: when you sing like Conor, you spit a lot. I wonder if Mr. Oberst had ever attempted wooing a lady with his playing and singing and then ruuined it all by spitting on her/them. Wait? What? He's too hot? Oh, okay. So spit doesn't matter in his case.
Oh, and then playing and singing Postal Service songs in the style of Johnny Cash. That was fun. Open mic next week, kids!

Addendums: nostalgia! Dec. 2nd, 2004 @ 02:20 am
Shit, I was drunk.

Shit needs to get out of my top five list of best shows. First of all, r.e.m., huh? It was gross arena rock. Maybe if I saw them in '86 at the Oriental with Camper Van Beethoven. Supporting Fables of the Resconstruction and Life's Rich Pageant. When they put out an album a year. And were good. So: show expunged!

Side note: it's really depressing when a band you spent your formative years with goes sour. See: "Around the Sun."

But most still apply. However, there are two shows that need to fit along somewhere in there:
a) Magnetic Fields in support of "69 Love Songs" in the Twin Cities. Fucking tops. But it didn't make me cry.

and

b) Um, Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control in Madison? Jeff Mangum was cool as hell, and this was the downtime between "On Avery Island" and their masterpiece. I do think "Aeroplane," twenty years from now, will be considered a classic of the late 20th century. I mean, the indie press already think so, but I'm talking Rolling Stone and Spin.

On that note, it was great to see/hear songs like "Two Headed Boy" for the first time. And there was virtually no turn out. I got to say hi to Jeff and he was super nice. I can't say the same for the Olivia Tremor duo, though I still highly regard both dusk at cubist castle and black foliage. I had to shout out "holiday surprise" dozens of time. Though I think they were somewhat glad that someone there actually knew their songs. Another tangent: we actually found out about that show while seeing Pavement with the Apples in Stereo opening. THAT show on the other hand, was pretty sucky. Bad, bad sound. And it was in support of Brighten the Corners. (Better than Terror Twilight, though.) Speaking of Pavement, I still need to get/download that Crooked Rain reissue.

More pavement: I don't get you kids. Crooked Rain is superior to Slanted, in my mind. I mean, sure: there's the thrill of being some kid hearing Slanted for the first time and saying "What the Hell is this?"
But, Crooked Rain, songcraft-wise, is better. I won't say more refined, but there aint no "gold soundz" "cut your hair" or "range life" on "Slanted."

Runner-ups I forgot: Sebadoh in Chi-town. "Dramamine!" Matthew Sweet in support of "Girlfriend" in Milwaukee, with the then-awesome Jayhawks opening, in support of "Hollywood Town Hall." Front row with Matt Gumz. Great times.

» So let me talk about:
The Arcade Fire.

They are probably the best band I have seen in recent years. All about community and love. See - this is this: I have made a list of the best shows I have ever seen. Al - you were there for a couple!

1) Belle and Sebastian - in Chitown. "A Century of Fakers" made me cry. I stood in the back.

2) Jeremy Enigk - in Madtown. In 1997, I had just gotten over my first panic/anxiety attack. At any given moment, I believed death around the corner. Tehn Jeremy broke into "Abigail Anne." I wept while siiting on the floor.

3) Modest Mouse - in Green Bay. Saw my friends open up for them. There were like five people there. "Cowboy Dan" was a highlight.

4) the Arcade Fire - I hate the Mad Planet. But. It was like all beauty placed forth into something intangible. It was the best show that I had ever seen that I had limited hopes for. For an amatuerish position, I think this may have been the best show I have ever seen.

5)r.e.m - 1994 - "country feedback" and inhaling smoke from afar. Yeah.
» Silhouettes.
You know:
I never really listened to the new Postal Service single. Though it is covered by the Shins. Sad and scary! I always am enamored with the idea of screwball nuclear annihilation metamorphosed into pop songs. Looking for the chords as we speak.

Wake up!

Tomorrow = open mic. The end begins somewhere.

Whoo!
Again, too drunk.
Today: played a lot of guitar. Figured out a bunch of Arcade Fire tunes. And some Lemonheads. I am waiting to get my pinkies up to stat. I will tell you this: play acoustic with pinky for three weeks and electric is no problem.

Today equates with beautiful. Snow. Everywhere. I talked to some people, and they don't seem to grasp the idea that romance = snowflakes in a girl's hair. Then kissing her.

My heart grows colder.

Children: wake up!

» Since when...
...did Conor Oberst think that he was post-synth, post-Postal Service silliness? Witness the new single.
Gargle. Gurgle. Eck. Make up your mind.
» Two new groups!
Very visible under my UserInfo are:
The Milwaukee Sad Sacks
and
The Anti-Hipsters of Milwaukee.

Join now! Lose friends! Not that you had any to begin with!
